Former owner of Chateau de Grandmont (a wine estate in the French wine region of Burgundy), Frenchman Georges Michel was already heartedly enamoured by wine when he and his family decided to move to New Zealand in 1999.
Georges Michel Wine Estate was established in 1997 and situated in the ‘Golden Mile’ which denotes the central route of the Rapaura road area, renowned for the production of the best flavored fruit of the Marlborough wine region like Sauvignon.
The first Sauvignon Blanc was released in 1998 followed by an oak-aged Chardonnay and a Pinot Noir crafted by the prestigious French winemaker Guy Brac de la Perriére, a man from one of Burgundy’s oldest winemaking dynasties. Since 2005 Georges’ daughter, Swan, (Bachelor in Oenology and Viticulture – Lincoln University NZ) has headed the winemaking team after several vintages in Bordeaux ( Chateau le Grand Verdus), Sancerre ( Henri Bourgeois) and Burgundy ( Domaine des Lambrays).
